When Hokusai began working on his series "36 Views of Mount Fuji" around 1830, Japan was still in a phase of relative isolation. The Edo period was characterized by internal stability, but also by clear social structures and limited exchange with the outside world. And yet, it was precisely during this time that images were created that would have an impact far beyond Japan. "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" belongs to this series – and is its most famous motif. Formally, it is a color woodcut, a medium that allowed for wide distribution. Art here was not exclusive but part of everyday life. The motif itself is unusually decisively chosen. The wave dominates the image, not as a background, but as a form that almost covers the entire scene. Its crest breaks, appearing almost like a hand closing. Beneath it: boats, small, fragile, hardly more than lines compared to the power above. In the background, Mount Fuji appears – stable, calm, almost untouched. And precisely therein lies an interesting inversion: the mountain, traditionally a symbol of permanence, becomes secondary here, while the fleeting movement of the water defines the image. Hokusai combines several layers in this work. On the one hand, it is a depiction of natural force; on the other, it is a precisely composed pictorial structure that thrives on line work and rhythm. At the same time, the work marks a transition. Japanese woodcuts like this one would reach Europe in the 19th century and influence artists such as Monet, Van Gogh, and Degas. "The Great Wave" is thus not only an iconic image but also a point where two art worlds begin to touch. A work that shows movement – and itself becomes part of a larger movement.
