A couple stands at the edge of a blooming meadow. In an intimate embrace, the man leans over the woman and kisses her face. The two figures almost seem to merge into a single golden garment. Ornaments, geometric patterns, and floral shapes cover their bodies. The man's cloak consists of rectangular, dark, and golden forms. The woman's dress, however, is adorned with round floral patterns. These contrasts of lines and circles reinforce the symbolic representation of male and female energy. Gold dominates the entire canvas. It reflects the light, making the scene appear almost like a religious icon. The figures stand on a small meadow full of flowers. Beyond them, there is no space – the background remains a golden surface that dissolves all spatial depth. The heads of the two figures are the only area that is realistically modeled. Skin, hair, and face appear soft and vibrant. The longer one looks, the more strongly the scene appears as a moment of timeless intimacy – frozen in a golden world.

Gold here does not stand for wealth, but for a conscious decision against space. When Gustav Klimt painted "The Kiss" around 1907/08, he was in a phase where he was increasingly moving away from illusionistic painting and instead working with surface, ornament, and material. This development is directly related to the Vienna Secession, which opposed academic traditions and sought new forms of expression. Klimt drew on various influences – Byzantine mosaics were particularly formative, their flat gold backgrounds eliminating spatial depth in favor of a timeless effect. At the same time, elements from applied art, such as patterns that resembled textiles or jewelry more than classical painting, flowed into his work. "The Kiss" emerged precisely in this tension between art and design. The figures remain recognizable, but they are no longer entirely part of a natural space. Instead, they are integrated into an ornamental structure that simultaneously surrounds and penetrates them. This combination of intimacy and abstraction is central to the work. Klimt succeeded in combining a universal motif – intimacy between two people – with a highly stylized form, without one displacing the other. At a time when art was increasingly moving away from naturalism, "The Kiss" represents a direction that did not rely on pure abstraction, but opened up new avenues between figure, surface, and symbolism. Thus, the work became one of the most famous examples of Viennese Modernism and a key image for understanding this period of upheaval around 1900.
