The gaze is direct – and almost impossible to avoid. Gustave Courbet painted "The Desperate Man" around 1843–45, in an early phase of his career, long before he was established as a central figure of Realism. The painting is part of a series of self-portraits in which Courbet deliberately experimented with roles, states, and expression. His aim was not a classic depiction of himself, but rather the representation of a moment that cannot be neatly categorized. The proximity is striking. The face is unusually close to the edge of the frame, the hands grasp at his hair as if seeking support where there is none left. The expression seems exaggerated, almost theatrical – and it is precisely this that creates an interesting tension. Courbet here still navigates between romantic staging and the Realism he would later define. He shows emotion not as an idealized gesture, but as something immediate and uncontrollable. At the same time, the image remains deliberately constructed. Light and composition are clearly set, the background recedes completely, nothing distracts. The focus is exclusively on the figure's state. In the mid-19th century, art increasingly began to detach itself from historical and mythological themes, turning its gaze to the contemporary, to the individual. Courbet became one of the driving forces behind this development. "The Desperate Man" already shows this transition: an image that still works with dramatic gesture, but simultaneously formulates the ambition to depict man without idealization. It is less a portrait than an examination – of how far one can go when making oneself the subject.

Shipping is protected and flat-packed – tailored to the material and format to permanently guarantee the quality of the artwork. Slight variations in color reproduction between screen and print are technically unavoidable and part of the printing process. As each piece is custom-made, exchanges are not possible. Should a piece arrive damaged or show production defects, we will of course find a solution.
