When Jan van Eyck painted the Arnolfini portrait in 1434, he was at the height of his technical and conceptual mastery. Van Eyck was not the inventor of oil painting, but its most radical refiner. With him, painting became a medium of absolute visibility. The painting was created during a time of redefinition of bourgeois identity. Wealth, trade, and individuality were gaining in importance. The Arnolfini portrait is not a courtly portrait, but rather an image of bourgeois self-affirmation. However, van Eyck does not stop at mere representation. He intertwines the private, the legal, the religious, and the artistic into a complex structure. Whether it depicts a marriage, an engagement, a legal document, or a memorial portrait remains a subject of research. Van Eyck deliberately leaves this interpretation open. The painting doesn't work through explanation, but through presence. It shows a moment imbued with meaning—regardless of whether we fully decipher it. In this phase, van Eyck conceived of painting as proof. The mirror, the signature, the meticulous depiction of the world – all of this asserts: This is how it was. And at the same time: This means more. The Arnolfini portrait is one of the first paintings to actively involve the viewer in his system. Whoever looks becomes part of the event. This work thus marks a turning point. Painting is no longer merely a representation or symbol, but a place. A space where reality, meaning, and perception converge.
