What is striking about this picture is not only the movement of the sky, but also the consistency with which color here loses every function except pure description. When Vincent van Gogh painted "The Starry Night" in 1889, he was in the asylum of Saint-Rémy – a place of confinement, but also of concentration. The view from his window merely provided the starting point; what emerged from it was a conscious over-formation. Van Gogh did not work as a neutral observer of the night, but as someone whose perception itself became part of the motif. In this context, his possible color blindness is often discussed – in particular, impaired perception in the red-green spectrum is debated. Whether medically clearly verifiable or not, what is crucial is that his color choices never follow the claim to depict the world "correctly." Instead, he develops his own logic: yellow becomes radiance, blue becomes depth, contrasts are not softened but intensified. This attitude is particularly evident in "The Starry Night." The sky is no longer a background, but an active space that expands in spiraling movements. The stars do not appear as dots, but as pulsating bodies, almost like energetic centers. Beneath this moving sky lies a comparatively calm landscape – a village that in this form is more constructed than observed, with a church tower that is more reminiscent of van Gogh's Dutch origins than the South French surroundings. The cypress in the foreground connects both levels, as if it were drawing the movement of the sky into the earth. During this period, van Gogh definitively moved away from the Impressionist approach and developed a style of painting that no longer differentiated between external perception and internal experience. Color became the central medium of this shift. Whether for physiological reasons or conscious decision – it no longer follows an objective reality, but an emotional precision. "The Starry Night" thus stands not only for a personal struggle, but for a fundamental change in art: away from representation, towards a view in which perception itself becomes the subject.
