In the heart of Montmartre, not as an outside observer but as part of the scene, Pierre-Auguste Renoir began to develop this painting in 1876. "Bal du moulin de la Galette" emerged during a period when Paris was reorganizing itself after the upheavals of the 1870s – socially and culturally. At that time, Montmartre was still a semi-rural district on the outskirts of the city, a place where workers, artists, and the urban bourgeoisie mingled. The dance garden of the Moulin de la Galette became a meeting point for precisely this mix of people: unconstrained, loud, lively. Renoir did not work in his studio but directly on-site, with friends, acquaintances, and models whom he repeatedly integrated into the picture in various roles. The work thus became a kind of snapshot of a real, existing social structure. At the same time, Renoir was not concerned with documentary accuracy. Impressionism, of which he was a central figure, was less interested in fixed contours than in the interplay of light and movement. The famous flecks of light falling through the trees onto faces and clothing are no accident but deliberately placed elements that emphasize the fleeting nature of this moment. Forms partially dissolve, figures merge with each other, and yet the scene remains legible. It is a painting about community, but also about perception: about how a moment is composed of movement, light, and atmosphere. In a time when the metropolis was becoming increasingly anonymous, Renoir shows another side here – one in which intimacy, lightness, and social permeability seem possible. At the same time, it is already hinted that this world is not permanent. The painting captures it precisely because it would already change in the next moment.
