Here, one is not confronted with a landscape, but with an attitude towards the world. When Caspar David Friedrich painted "Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog" around 1818, he created a picture that less describes than orders – not nature, but the view of it. Germany was in a period after the Napoleonic Wars, politically fragmented, yet culturally increasingly searching for identity. Romanticism did not respond with clear answers, but with a retreat into the interior, into feeling, into the relationship between humans and nature. Friedrich became one of its central figures. The wanderer is not an individual character, but a representative. That he turns his back to the viewer is no coincidence, but a conscious device: the figure becomes a projection surface. One does not see him, but through him. This principle of the "Rückenfigur" (figure seen from behind) runs through Friedrich's work and fundamentally changes the role of the viewer. The landscape itself is not a concrete topography, but a composition of various mountain forms that Friedrich studied in Saxon Switzerland. Fog simultaneously conceals and connects, dissolves clear boundaries and creates a depth that is less spatial than intellectual. In this era, landscape painting began to detach itself from mere depiction and became a carrier of meaning. Nature is no longer background, but counterpart. The wanderer stands elevated, seemingly sovereign, yet it remains unclear whether he masters the landscape or is at its mercy. Precisely in this ambiguity lies the strength of the painting. It formulates not pathos, but a field of tension: between control and disorientation, between clarity and uncertainty. Friedrich thus succeeds in creating a work that is exemplary of the Romantic idea that knowledge arises not through distance but through experience – and that the view into the landscape is always also a look inward.

Shipping is protected and flat-packed – tailored to the material and format to permanently guarantee the quality of the artwork. Slight variations in color reproduction between screen and print are technically unavoidable and part of the printing process. As each piece is custom-made, exchanges are not possible. Should a piece arrive damaged or show production defects, we will of course find a solution.
