The work was created around 1665, during Johannes Vermeer's mature period in Delft. Unlike many of his interiors, this painting is not a traditional portrait. It belongs to a genre known in the Netherlands as a "tronie"—a study of a facial expression or character, often featuring exotic clothing or unusual lighting. Vermeer is not interested here in the identity of the person depicted, but rather in light, expression, and presence. The dark background intensifies the effect of the face, while the turban creates a timeless, almost iconic appearance. The painting technique is remarkably subtle. Vermeer uses only a few brushstrokes to create light reflections and texture. The pearl earring, in particular, consists essentially of just a few dabs of paint – and yet appears completely real. Today, the painting is one of the most famous works of European art and is often referred to as the "Mona Lisa of the North".
