The surface of a still pond fills the entire image. Water lily leaves float calmly on the water. Their round shapes lie like small islands on the dark surface of the pond. The actual motif, however, is not the plant itself, but the light on the water. A bright golden reflection runs vertically through the image. It is created by the reflection of the setting sun, which breaks in the moving water. The water surface becomes a network of colors: blue, green, gold, and violet shadows merge. There is no fixed horizon and no clear space. Water, light, and reflection become a single picturesque surface. The brushstrokes are free and lively. Monet increasingly dissolves forms, so that the painting appears almost abstract.

What is emerging here is less a single image than an ongoing attempt to make time visible. In the 1890s, Claude Monet began to intensively engage with his water lily motifs in Giverny – not as finished works, but as a constantly changing series. "Nymphéas I" belongs to these early works, in which a crucial shift is already apparent: The gaze no longer focuses on a landscape in the classical sense, but on the surface itself – on what happens between sky, water, and reflection. At this time, France is in a period of relative stability, yet artistically, much is in flux. Impressionism has already established itself, and Monet is one of its central figures. At the same time, he goes a step further here: The clear separation between object and environment begins to dissolve. Water is no longer depicted as space, but as a surface that absorbs everything – light, color, movement. The water lilies themselves can barely be grasped as solid forms; rather, they drift as visual anchors in a network of reflections. Monet is increasingly interested in the ephemeral, in what is constantly changing and can never be fully captured. This development later leads him to the large-format water lily paintings, in which the painting almost completely detaches itself from figurative representation. "Nymphéas I" thus stands at a transition: between classical Impressionism and a style of painting that already points towards abstraction. It is a work that no longer describes, but observes – and in doing so begins to make perception itself the actual subject.
