Beneath this moving sky lies a comparatively calm landscape – a village that in this form is more constructed than observed, with a church tower that is more reminiscent of van Gogh's Dutch origins than the South French surroundings. The cypress in the foreground connects both levels, as if it were drawing the movement of the sky into the earth. During this period, van Gogh definitively moved away from the Impressionist approach and developed a style of painting that no longer differentiated between external perception and internal experience.
